ROUND BUSH SCENIC RESERVE.
HARBOUR BOARD AND DEPARTMENT DO NOT CONCURR
ON MATTER OF SCENIC WORTH.
At the monthly meeting of the koxton Harbour Board held locally yesterday a reply was received to the Board’s recent request that the Commissioner of Grown Lands have an inspection made of the Round Bush Scenic Reserve with a view to having the area fenced as a protective measure, wherein the Department stated that its ranger had inspected the bush and was of the opinion that little if any of its scenic beauty was left owing to the ravages of Sambur deer. Under the circumstances the Commissioner considered it was not. worth while fencing the reserve.
Members were not in agreement with the report, Air. Edwards stating that he thought the reserve well forth fencing. Air. W. E. Barbei- said that the Commissioner of Crown Lands had agreed to fence the reserve three years ago after his inspector had gone through the bush. Mr. Barber said he had accompanied the lunger on his inspection. A whole morning had been spent there and he was surprised to find a tine puketea hush at the south-west end. Such a bush was seldom to be seen now and this one was equal to anything he had ever seen. Mr. Barber said be had not been over tin' bush for some time but he knew that deer congregated there at certain times of the year and did a good deal of damage. Shooting parties were necessary to eliminate them, hut he did not think the bush was as had as the report indicated. If the area was fenced it would protect young growth and the bush would soon be wcl’l established again. Young white pine trees were eominjr up very thick. .<• f
It was decided to arrange an inspection of the bush at an early date together with Mr. .J. K. Hornblow, the Department’s representative.
