21st APRIL, 1931.

It is announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. P. A. de la Percllc) that the next New Zealand Census shall he taken on the night of 21st April, 1931. The .Minister stated that April is considered the best month for a New Zealand Census, as holiday movements and tourist traffic have subsided. It is not suJH.cient.ly far into the autumn to anticipate unsettled weather, and it ta-kes account of the numerous changes in -talus or boudaries of local ‘authorities which dale usually from Ist April. Many of the countries of the Empire, including the recent additions in this respect of England and Scotland, now lake the Census every fifth fear, but there are some, India and Australia in particular, in mliicli tin* Census is taken every tenth year. In 1931 a Census will la taken throughout the Empire, mkl in accordance with the established practice, the date will probably fall universally within two months of Ist April. In 1931 Easter Sunday will fall on f>!li April, ami it is advisable io lix the date sufficiently far from Easier to avoid holiday disturbances. In 1921) the ICensns was taken for the night of Tuesday, 20th April. Tuesday was adopted in preference to Sunday, in view of Ihe growing' habit of week-ending end consequent absence from the usual place of residence. No dillicnlty was experienced in the i liange, and the result proved licnolieial in greatly reducing the number of absentees from home as compared with previous censuses.
