FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in tho Council Chambers last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: — ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. The road foreman (Mr. A. G. Huntley) reported as follows: During the month the road staff has been engaged in mixing asphalt in the yard, patching ruts and grading Duncan, Hall and Whyte Sts., and Avenue and Sandon roads, erecting fence at end of culvert in Johnston Street, widening bitumen surface at junction of Park and Victoria. Streets; asphalting 1 footpath in Purcell Street, asphalting yard and path at Town Hall cottage and ' general maintenance. Adopted. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT.

The waterworks foreman (Mr. W. Neville) reported that during

the month lie had been engaged in

repairing the fence around the cemetery; traffic duty both race days, cleaning three sewers, extending

two water services, repairing water meters and general maintenance work as well as attending to bylaw matters.

Pumping 'Station: —During the month 2,100,000 gallons of water was pumped., tlie maximum current used being 30 amps. —Adopted. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas manager (Air. C. MacLean) reported that two blocked services were attended to during the month. The plant was operated quite satisfactorily during the period.—Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows : From the. Wellington Automobile Association, in regard to a communication received from the Council pointing out that the notice hoard erected at Foxton indicating to motorists the state of the Fox-tmi-Levin road in flood time was not being altered according to the prevailing conditions. The Association informed the Council that. Foxton was now in the Manawatu Association’s area and the matter had been referred to this body and would possibly receive the necessary satisfactory attention in future. —Received.

From the Palmei’ston North Borough Council, stating that they were only too pleased to assist the Council in the matter of a report on the local gas \yorks and permission would be given their engineer, Mr. Day, to undertake the necessary work—Received.

From the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, informing the Council, that as from Ist February, 15)30, the minimum ratp for overdraft will be 7 per cent, and that the Council’s interest in that respect had been increased accordingly. —Received. From the District Engineer to the Public Works Department, pointing cut that as the end of the financial year was at hand in connection wit'll the main highways and roads expenditure it was desirable that as much of the expenditure to be incurred before the 31st March be .brought to charge before that date when the office will endeavour to pay all claims which are rendered not later than the 14th March and are in order before the end of the financial year. —Received. TOWN HALL CONVENIENCES. Or. Robinson reported that a very disagreeable odour was often noticed emanating from the Town Hall conveniences and considered in the interests of public health, the matter should be attended to. The Clerk said he had been worried over the matter for some time. The trouble was that the conveniences were used as public conveniences and not restricted to the hours when the hall was in use. Nuisances were often committed. Everything possible bad been done to prevent tlie complaint and a new Ilnsher recently installed. Mr.

closed ito public use except on occasions Avhen the hall was in use he z. could give a guarantee that there would be no need for complaint. Cr. Ross suggested some better means ,of , ventilation and it was decided to* leave the matter in the hands of the Town Clerk.
