BRITISH RUGBY CAPTAIN.
CRITISH OP WIAICEPIiELO
A cable announcement was made last week that W. \V. Wakefield had been appointed captain of the Bri--1 tish Rugby team to tour New ZeaJ land during- the coming- season. This would ifppear to conflict with the following- views expressed in December by a writer in an English paper. ITe stated: — ‘‘Two Rugby Union selections have been made that have astonished critical observers. One is the inclusion of W. \V. Wakefield in the second international trial match the other is the choice of If. E. Garris «as the left wing- threequarter in the Cambridge University fifteen.” “Wakefield, as all know, has been a great player, but has been and is are as the poles apart. In the Northhampton match not only was , it apparent that he could not stay the pace, hut. that he also had no inclination for hard scrummaging: further, ho waited for opportunities for spasmodic rushes whie.li, 'unconsciously no doubt on his part, passed as ’brilliant flashes to those [ who have been praising- him as a great come-back. England will need a much better serummager against Wales.”
