THE GAS WORKS.
REPORT BKLNO BREDA RED. The Mayor reported at lasi night's Borough Council meeting that last week Mr. Day (Engineer In the Palmerston North Borough Council) hail visited Foxton and inspected the gas works. He was prepared to give the Council a report on the works for the sum of J.TO. The ICLnm-il had decided to obtain a. report on the works at last meeting in view of a report circulated to Hie effect that the noiks were a scrap heap, and it was now for the Coiudl to say whether or not the price was sntislactory. Personally he was of opinion that a report was necessary and tin 1 expense would be well north while. The engineer was satisfactory and competent and his report should he very valuable. In any case it was only fair to the newly-appointed manager that a report he obtained. The works were by no means a scrap heap although they may appear so to a person other than a gas engineer. They were not a paying proposition but this could not. be attributed altogether to the state of the works. Ilie interest account was very heavy on the .£11,090 paid for the .works when the Council took them over. That was really the bug bear in connection with the works. If Mr. Day’s report wsa accepted lie could be called in at any time in the future on the payment of a small amount as consulting engineer.
Cr. Cowley said It was the unanimous wish of tint Council that the report be obtained. Cr. Boss said the fee asked was very reasonable. The Council might save more than that amount l>\ one suggestion in the report. - K.V. Barron considered the report would he helpful in preparing next year’s estimates in connection with the gas works. It was unanimously decided to obtain the report at ligure mentioned.
