24.000 ACRES OF FIRST-CLASS LAND ACQUIRED.’ Wellington, February 5. A total of 2-1,00(1 acres will be available tor closer .settlement as a result of the purchase the Government bus concluded, under the Land for Settlement Act, of the Wihien estate, formerly owned by Mr. R. L. Acton-Adams, and situated near lieriot, Otago. The Minister of Lands (the Hon. G W. 'Forbes) said the property comprised 1 0,1 7-1 acres freehold and 8800 acres held under pastoral license. The land is of excellent quality. The (imposed number of subdivisions is from 12 to 14. The land is first-class grazing country and a large proportion of it is suitable lor cropping. Slock carried prior to the purchase by the Government was 18,340 ewes, 4320 dry sheep and 340 cattle. The purchase price is not disclosed. A ballot will he held in the second week in April.
MV. Forbes said (lie Government had mnv purchased under its closer settlement policy some 27 properties, aggregating 50,000 acres. ’1 hose would provide 125 additional holdings, a number of which had a I read v been selected.
