AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

MISS BARRON AT NAPIER

The Hawke's Bay Herald in its report of the athletic meeting held on Wednesday evening last, says:

“The night carnival licit! by the* Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club oil McLean Park on Wednesday evening was a very great success in every respect. The attendance was quite the largest seen at any sports meeting in Napier this season, hut had the ground been packed to its utmost capacity it would not have been more than the splendid evening’s sport deserted. The chief attractions for the large crowd, which gathered on the ground was tho presence of Miss M. Barron, of Foxton, the Wellington Provincial lady champion, who took part, in two invitation scratch races, and also in a very sporting spirit, took the place of Miss G. Byrnes in the Hastings team in giving an exhibition relay in Mu* Treston Banner contest.

“It. may lie said, that the ladies’ contests more than realised the most optimistic of expectations. They were alone worth going a long way to see, and the club deserves the thanks of the sporting- community on staging such fine contests, and Miss Barron also deserves thanks for coming such a distance to compete. Miss Barron is a very tine sprinter indeed, and a very stylish runner, hut is inclined to break away, a fault which it is to be hoped time will cure for she is yet very young. Mn the 50 yards invitation

scratch, in which Misses Barron, Lean, Hoyle, and Morten took part, the spectators were treated to a splendid rac-e and a thrililng finish. After several breaksaway, chiefly caused by Miss Barron’s over-an-xietv, the four girls got away to a beautiful start, Miss Barron quickly taking command with Miss Hoyle second. A few yards from the tape Miss Lean put in a great run but Miss Barron won by nearly a foot from Miss Lean, who was only three or four inches in front of M iss Hoyle. It was a finish which drew a fine burst of applause from tlie spectators. The time (i 2-ssec., is only l-l()th of a second off Miss hi. Hoyle’s world record, and as there was a slight breeze against the runners, it was a wonderfully fine performance.”
