SAVED FROM BLAZING HOUSE.
CHILDREN RESCUED AND .MOTHER’S NARROW ESCAPE. Christchurch, January 28. A narrow escape from being trapped in a blazing- house was the terrifying experience of All’s. H. J. Newton and her two children when her home at 57 Mary Street, Papanui, caught lire in the early hours of this morning. Airs. Newton awakened to find the bedroom full of smoke and darts of llames, and she had just time to bring Mr Newton from hs bedroom in' a bach a few yards from the house to rescue the children before the whole house burst into flames.
Mr. Newton stated that, but for the opportune nwa'kening of Mrs. Newton, she and the two children would undoubtedly have perished. Ho was sleeping in a bach at the end of the garden when Mrs. Newton dashed in at about half-past one and told him that the house was on fire. On rushing out Mr. Newton was horrified to see the house apparently a mass of flames, lie managed to make his way into the bedroom, however, and got the stupefied children into the open. Mrs. Newton was very dazed and partly suffocated by the smoke, while the children were incapable of helping themselves. The hold taken by the fire was shown by the fact that Mir. Newton's hair and eyebrows were badly singed. The origin of the fire is unknown.
The building was insured in the Loyal Office for £l5O, but there was no insurance on the contents.
