VALUABLE FLAX BURNED.

CANAL CHECK'S THE FLAMES. Kerepeehi, Monday. A large area of scrub-covered swamp south of what is known as the Kerepeelii block caught fire about 10 o’clock l on Saturday morning. The fire spread in all directions, but mainly toward the Elstow Canal. Much valuable standing flax was destroyed. It was reported to-day that, the canal had (.-becked the progress of the flames.
