SAND DRIFTS.
“Little things into big tilings grow” is a very true quotation when it comes to sand drifts. Prior to last Thursday’s meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Board members were conversing on sand-drifts and their causes when one member mentioned that a drift at Oroua Downs which now extends for a tremendous distance over what was ouce a fairly good farm was caused through a man putting the plough into a paddock. The soil waS naturally sandy and just after the area was tm-ned over a period of westerly gales was experienced lasting for practically three Months. The result was that the paddock commenced to drift and in a very short while extended practically the whole length of the 'farm. The cause of the big drift on the Hiinatangi Estate extending from the boundary fence alongside the railway line just this side of the Chinese market gardens for a distance of two miles down the run was caused by traffic through the gateway leading on to the farm wearing a hole which bared the sand. This drift now (occupies acre upon acre of the estate.
