FOXTON VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

TNT Eli - BRIG ADE BILLIA R D TOURNAMENT.

COLEY SHIELD RETAINED BY FOXTON.

Some years ago the late Mr.. Geo. Coley presented a challenge shield to be competed for in a billiard tournament between the Foxton, Palmerston North, Feilding and Levin fire brigades. Feilding was tlm first to annex the shield and successfully • retained it for about five years but last year a local team brought hack the trophy. Last night the Feilding brigade essayed Umreonpture it but were unsuccessful. Feilding was represented by Foreman Gaskin, Firemen Fisher and Adams. The local defenders ■were Firemen Hull', Robinson and Broad. Three games were played of 100 up, the win was decided on the aggregate scores. Foxton s total was 280 and Feilding s 240. Pno most interesting game was that between Foreman Gaskin and l 1 ircman, Hull'. The former ran out with a score of 100 (his best breaks being 10 and 15) while Huff starting off with breaks of 23 and 32 in the initial stages had a good lead but Gaskin by heady strokes and playing for safety overhauled him. Fireman Robinson put on 100 while .Fireman Fisheij who was in humorous vein, totalled 07. Fisher’s best 'breaks were If), 15, 11 and Robinson's 2!), 12, 13. Fireman Broad readied his 100 (best breaks 11, '7, 20) when Fireman Adams reached 07 (lies! breaks of 15 and 12). Fireman Hull, who made the best break retained the Levy ferns.

Mr. J. K. Hornblow, on behalf of the Fire Board, congratulated the winners on tlieiir success and the losers on their ifine sportsmanship. Such gatherings, ho said, forged ties of friendship and goodwill between the brigades concerned.

Messrs M. E. Porreau and John •Ross (Board members) also expressed similar sentiments. Cheers were exchanged between members of the two brigades. The visitors were subsequently entertained at supper, when Superintendent 11. Reid expressed pleasure at the re-union. Speaking of the tournament ho suggested that the games should be 200 up instead of" 100 as this would afford players more time to give of their best. He hoped that the Levin and Palmerston brigades would send in challenges for the shield. Foreman Gaskin heartily congratulated the winners on retaining the shield and said that he hoped on another occasion the visitoi’s would he more successful.
