DARING THEFT AT A BANK.
£1(10 TAKEN FROM DRAWER DURING TELLER’S ABSENCE. Da mi evoke, January (i. The authorised transfer of approximately £lfio from the Dannevirke branch of the Commercial Bank to some person at present unknown took place this morning, between 10.15 and 10.20. During the temporary absence at'the rear of the building of the teller, Air. Gimblett, some person entered the premises, which are situated in the main thoroughfare, opposite the Post Office, and, making the most of the opportunity, walked out with a roll of single notes to the amount previously stated. The only other member of the staff about was the manager, Air. R. Chisholm, who was in his private office at the rear of the chamber where public business is transacted, and the money was in the teller’s drawer on the inside of the four-foot counter, the door of the grille being closed. The individual who made the daring theft had to open the door of the grille to reach over the counter and abstract the notes from the drawer. The manager, healring a noise, came from his office to investigate. He saw no one, but noticed a shadow on the window dividing off the compart merit where the ledgers are kept. On Mr. Gimblett’s return, the manager mentioned the incident. An investigation of the cash was immediately, made, and the loss of the bundle of notes was discovered. The police are now busy on the affair.
