■ * LABOUR WINS BY NARROW MAJORITY. 608, ABSENTEE VOTES TO COME IN. • Wellington, Last Night. The by-election for the Hutt electorate rendered vacant by the appointment of the Hon.. T. M. Wilford as High Commissioner, resulted as follows: Walter Nash (Labour) 4,793 James Ivan- (United) 4,637 Harold F. Johnston (Reform) 2,368 Majority for Nash 156 There are '6OB absentee votes to come, which may affect the result as between Nash and Kerr. The state of the parties in the House of Representatives is now as follows: United * 27 Reform 28 Labour „ .20 Independents and Country Party 5 In the 1928 election, the results were:— , Wiilford 7,283 * Nash 5,878 Majority 1,305 In 1925, which . also a straight-out contest, the resuit was: — Wilford. 6,080 Nash . v 4,286 Majority 1,794 Yesterday’s ‘ figures show a decrease in the Labour vote of approximately ten per cent.
