PENSIONER’S FALSE DECLARATION.

Wairoa, December 13,

' At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon a Maori returned (Soldier pleaded guilty to false declaration regarding his earnings. The accused, a married man, with a wife and a large family, receives a pension of £6 15/- a week. The case was brought by the Department as a warning. The Magistrate, Mr. Harper, characterised the offence as mean and contemptible in the extreme. The accused should go to gaol. As there were no doubt several similar cases elsewhere, be inflicted a fine of £5 and costs, and ordered restitution to the Department of £lO 17/11, to be deducted by the Department from bis future pension.
