DEATH OF BISHOP CLEARY.

Auckland, Last Night

Bishop 'Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, died >at 2.43 p.m 1 . The funeral arrangements were finalised (late to-night. The body, dressed in the vestments of office, was removed to Bishop’s House, Ponsonby, and will be taken privately to-morrow afternoon to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the lying-in-state.

'Solemn Requiem Mass, to be attended by childlren of the Roman Catholic schools and orphanages will be held on Wednesday morning and the Funeral Mass will take .place on Thursday morning. At the express -wish of the late Bishop, the interment will take place in the cemetery at Panmure, where are buried many former priests of the diocese. AJso at the Bishop’s request, there will be no (lowers in connection with the obsequies. Archbishops Redwood and O’iShea, Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, and Bishop Whyte,, of Dunedin, will take part in the various services.

Dr. .T. M. Liston, who has been co-adjutor to Bishop Cleai'y since 1920, automatically becomes Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland.

The Rt. Rev. Henry William Cleary, D.D., 0.8. E., was born in County Wexford, Ireland, in 1859, the son of 'the late Mr. Robert Cleary, the deceased prelate was educated at. -St. Aidan’s Academy, Enniscorthy, St. Peter’s College, W/xfoird, M'aynoolli, the Papal University, Rome, and the College of St. (Sulpice, in Paris, where he obtained his doctorate of divinity.

The late Bishop was ordained priest on January 11, 1885, was assistant priest at Ballarat, Hamilton and Ararat (Victoria) from 1888 'to 1898, and editor of the N.Z. Tablet flrom January of the latter year till his appointment to the Bishopric* of Auckland. In 1918, he founded The Month, which he had edited continuously until his illness. His late Lordship served as chaplain to the N.Z.E.F. while on sick leave in Europe in 1916 and 1917, being attached to the 2nd Brigade and doing duty in the trenches in Flanders. By his death, the Church loses one of its most distinguished prelates.
