FINAL TALKIES PROGRAMME

Against shifting backgrounds of New York’s colourful east side and the luxurious surroundings of Riverside Drive (Columbia’s “Younger Generation,” a synchronised part talking picture which will be shown at the Town Hall to-night. Pathos is relieved by deft touches of humour that hide tears with smiles. Love ready to sacrifice- itself for another is revealed in tense situations. A fire in a tenement house, a bold daylight robbery on Fifth Avenue and gay social functions are among- the highlights. “The Younger Generation” is an adapta4ion of the stage play, “It is to Laugh,” and the ■ story “The Gold in the Fish,” by Fannie Hurst. It has been pronounced her best work. As a play it made a tremendous hit. As a story it thrilled millions of readers. As a plvotodrama it is the sensation of the year. Jean Hersholt has the stellar role and gives lone of the best performances of his long and varied career. He is supported by an a!l star cast, one of the best ever assembled for a single production. The list includes the names of Lina Basquette, Rosa Rosandva, Riqardo Cortez, Rex Lease. Also an alf-sijnging featurette, “Old Man Trouble,” and a new screen snapshots in which film stairs talk. Such a s'tory is presented in the remarkable Paramount motion picture, “Barbed Wire,” at the Town Hall on Wed - nesday. This new Pola Negri starring vehicle has met with nothing short of an ovation everywhere it has been shown; critics and audiences hail it as the greatest thing that the exotic Polish star has ever done; greater even than “Hotel Imperial,” her Irecent sensational hit.
