LARGE WATER CONSUMPTION.
SURREPTITIOUS USE OF HOSE,
The fact that 250,000 gallons of watel" is being used locally every two hours during the summer evenings came as :a surprise to Councillors last evening.
The Mayor explained that this was due to the fact that a number of residents were using the water for gardening purposes without meters. These 'offenders should be cautioned and the inspector instructed to watch for such illegal use of water as the position would be serious in the event of an outbreak of fire when the water was low.
Cr. Cowley said that some people had meters installed and they were l lie only ones entitled to use the waiter ou gardens. Some were compelled to put motets in and it was. only fair that any offenders should ibe brought to book. The Clerk said some people with-
out meters were in the habit of digging trenches and letting the water run through Uve garden from! a tap. It was agreed that the waterworks inspector should take action against offenders.
