FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the local District High School Committee was held last night, presided over by Mr. J. K. Horniblow (chairman). .There were also present: Messrs Perreau, G. P. Smith, John Ross, H. Hutchins, H. Rangiheuea (lion, sec.), and the headmaster (Mr. F. A. Mason) was also in attendance. Apologies 'for absence were received from Messrs Scott, Huntley and iStevenspn. Accounts amounting to £42 5/9 were passed for payment.. / .' The secretary was instructed to obtain a statement of subsidies yet to be uplifted from the Board.

Mr. Hutchins was authorised to furnish an estimate for laying down a basketball area. The necessity for incx-easiug the tennis area was also discussed, and further action held over until the subsidy statement is submitted.

The headmaster recommended the purchase of two typewriters and a duplicator for use of pupils taking the commercial course and tor supplying question and test papers to the pupils.—lt was decided to ear-mark £ls from the concert funds for this purpose. The headmaster reported that .Miss Mountfort (infant mistress), had been granted extended leave of absence on account of sickness and that two relieving teachers wfere on the staff. Mr. Bastion had been appointed assistant teacher, vice Mi-. Chipper, and would take up his duties in the new year. The roll numbers were as follows: Primary 417 (average t)l per cent.); secondary, 37 (average 94 per cent); side school 48 (average 94 per cent.); a total roll number of 502. The matriculation examination would ecmmnenee to-day and five candidates all of whom were three - year students, would sit; and seven candidates would sit for the public service entrance. The proficiency examinations would be held next Thursday. Twenty-one of the 52 pupils to sit had been exempted on his recommendation. Arrangements were in! hand for holding the annual concert, but the staff was handicapped this year for lack of assistance in training the children. —The report was-adopted. Messirs Hutchins and Smith were appointed visitors for the month.
