LIFE-SAVING AT THE SEASIDE.

* PROPOSED SURF PATROL,

The question of the necessity for the institution of a surf patrol at the local seaside during the holiday season was discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the Poxton Harbour Board.

The chairman, Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., commented that the matter was one of importance and urgency. The question of having a patrol at the beach had been considered before and he thought that the Mayor of Fox ton had been left to organise it. Mr. M. E. Perreau stated that he had written to the Swimming Club, but had received lio reply. He did not remember that the duty of organising the patfl’of had been left to him.

Mr. A. J. Kellow asked if the pilot had been given instructions to take the reel on to the beach.

The chairman replied that that had been done. A new line was needed for the reel as the existing hennp line got very heavy when wet.

Mr. Kellow: Is one line sufficient ! ■

The chairman: Two would be better, but the line is seldom used. I suggest that the Life Saving Society should co-operate with Mr. Perreau.

Mr. Perreau thought that the Life Saving Society should send a representative to the aimual meeting of the Beach Improvement Committee. '

The chairman stated that if a patrol was formed it should he of Foxton swimmers ■ as the visitors were a floating population. Mjr. Kellow stated that residents of Foxton would not be on the beach. The pilot should be in charge of the patrol. If the Swimming Club organised the patrol Mr. Bleukhorn thought that they would be able to enrol visiting swimmers. Mr. R.. Edwards considered that the matter of securing a new line was one of Urgency. They did not •know- when they would need it. Mr. C. Blenkhorn stated that a serious drowning fatality bad occurred on the river beach some time ago. He thought' there should he another reel there. * It was decided to secure a new line for. the old awl and a new reel and also to recommend that the Life Saving Society take the matter up with the Beach Improvement Comlmittee.
