BOY SERIOUSLY INJURED
IN DISASTROUS CHEMICAL EXPERIMENT.
Christchurch, November 26,
While conducting chemical experiments in his father’s garage at Belfast on Sunday, Edward Garrick, a schoolboy attending St. Andrew’s College, caused an explosion and seriously injured himself. The boy was carrying on on his own account some of the chemical experiments he was doing alt school. He was ramming some potassium chlorate into an iron tube, and apparently the friction caused this compound to explode with great force. Part of the tube went through the ear in the garage and the workshop itself was badly damaged. The boy suffered very severe injuries, and is now dangerously ill in St. George’s Hospital. He is reported to be progressing as well as can be expected. He is a son of Mr. Percy Garrick, manager of tho Belfast freezing works.
