GIRL GUIDES.

MORE PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE REQUIRED.

At the shop day held recently in aid of the camping fund for guides, fairly good business was done. The winners of the competitions were: Weight of pig, 14:|lbs., Mr. Riekerfcy; weight of eajee, 51bs. 14ozs. There was no cqjrrect guess for this but four tied for nearest weight, viz., I,s.jibs. The four who drew were Airs. Arcus, Airs. C. Robinson, Airs. Sutherland and Aliss E. Aloore. Airs. Sutherland proved to be the winner. The stockings will he drawn later.

The “500” evening was a disappointment to the committee. Quite a crowd was expected, instead of which there was a very poor attendance. Consequently the funds necessary to send the four local girls to the Dominion camp in January are £4 short. The committee worked very hard in connection with the shop day and card evening, as they were short handed, two of their number being away through illness. There has been no canvassing for this movement, yet it seems to receive very little support. Alembers are asked for 5/per annum, bflf of which goes to Headquarters. Everyone readily agrees that the movement is an excellent one in every, way, yet so few do anything to help, even by way of getting a return for their money, as with the card evening.

. The committee has no axe to grind, not one of the members having anyone in the guides. They simply wish to carry on a good work —to make good and useful citizens of our girls. The Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement has been referred to at Home as “The League of Nations of the Future,” yet it is so difficult, to keep the guide movement going in Foxton, that it seems before long it will have to be abandoned.
