BOROUGH COUNCIL.

RESIGNATION OF GAS MANAGER,

As a sequel to'the recent Court proceedings wherein a ease of theft of monies from slot meters was preferred against the gas manager by the police a:t the instigation of the Audit Department and dismissed iby the Magistrate, a special meeting of the Bdippgh Council was held last night. The [Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) presided over a full Council. Mr. Kane (Government Auditor, of Palmerston N.), was also in attendance. After a. letter from the Audit Department- relative to the ease was', read, Mr. Heyes was asked for an explanation. Mr. Heyes attributed his trouble to gross cai'elessness and after answering a number of questions he was asked to tender his resignation which he did, the 'Council accepting same. Mr. C. McLean was appointed to the position of gas manager and empowered to engage the necessary labour for stoking.

At the conclusion of the meeting a resolution was earned unanimously that the Mayor and Town C-lork were in the opinion of the Council, quite in order in complying with the request of the Audit Department that the recent slot meter investigaions should have been kept confidential.
