THE SUMMER SHOW.

OPENED THIS AFTERNOON.

FINE EXHIBITION

'The Foxton Horticultural Society's Summer Show was officially opened in the Town Hall this afternoon by Mi\ Cf. A. Troup Esq. (Mayor of Wellington). The exhibition, which malrks the twenty-’first anniversary of the Society, is particularly good, entries’ being a record. Unfortunately the i eeent bad weather has had a very detrimental effect on the blooms generally but despite this fact the show is of a high order. The cooking and needlework sections have been particularly well patronised. This evening a concert programme has been arranged and a large attendance is expected.

Over 475 entries were received besides 200 free school exhibits, a record for the Society.

The judges in connection with the show were as follows: —hoses: Canon Petrie (iFeilding); sweet peas: Mr. [Mason junr.; cut blooms and pot plants:-Mr. Shadier (Palmclrston North) ; decorative: Madame De Roux (Levin); vegetables and cottage gardens: Mr. Evans ( Manakau); cookery and home industries : Mr. A. E. Whitehead (Palmerston North); child’s school lunch: Nurse Lockwood (Palmerston North); needlework: Miss .Wyber (Palmerston North); school work: Mr. Nicol (Oroua Downs).

The, school section was particularly good and created considerable interest.

. Instead of awarding a first and second in the under 1(1 section in the school writing the judge awarded four firsts The total prize money to be divided up. The. prize winners were B. Staff, G. McEwen, ■Joan Robinson and J. Walker. In section I*l rind under the prize winner was N. Botaroff.

lan Cummerfield won the plasticine section with D. Booth second.

The champion rose of the show was entered by Miss Hughes.

Mr. E. Bond annexed the ‘best vase from two collections of sweet .pens (Miss (Hughes’ trophy), and (Mrs. F. Procter the best vase in 1 ho* show.

Mrs. Owen won the best, deeoraTed table, Miss E. Patterson was second in the novice class.

- The best decorated table, no embellishments, went to Mrs, F. Procter. Mrs. Owen was second and Miss B. Speii-.s third.

Cottage Gardens: (Messrs S. H. I*o9le's and J. Cln-vstall’s £1 1/each) : Mrs. A. Heasman 1, Mrs. J. Andrews 2, Mr. K. Robinson 3. Kitchen Garden: (Mr. F. Woods, 15/- and 5/-) : Mr. T. East. 1, Mrs. Trueman 2.
