HUTT BY-ELECTION.
FOUR CANDIDATES IN THE FIELD. mmmfUkk, Wellington, November 18. Hon. T. iM. Wilford, K.C., tendered his resignation as member for Ilutt to-day,.hut he will retain the portfolios of Defence and Justice until December 7. The writ for the by-eleetion will probably ho issued next Monday. The date of the election will he December 18. There are now four candidates for the Hutt seat, as follow: — James Kerr Government. Harold F. Johnston. Reform. Walter Nash Labour. 11. D. Bennett Independent. PARTIES IN THE HOUSE. At present the strength of parties in the House is as follows: — United, 28; Reform (including Messrs. Harris and Lysnar), 28; Labour, 19; Country, 1; Independent, 4; total, 80'. » With four candidates in the field for the by-election the general assumption is that the Labour candidate (Mr. Nash) will not have such a strenuous fight as he has had for the seat on previous occasions, and that he has a good chance of increasing his party’s representation in the House to a score.
