MELBOURNE CUP.
WON BY NT OUTMARCH
New Zealand-bred horses by fil-ling-first, second, and third places in the Melbourne Clip on Tuesday ■registered an extraordinary performance. The achievement is the more noteworthy in that Nightmarch and Paquito, who were first and second, are also' owned and trained by New Zealanders and were ridden by New Zealanders. The third horse, Pliar Lap, is also trained by a New Zealander now resident dn Sydney. Niglitmarch, the winner, was always in the picture during the running of the race, and won fairly .comfortably. He was well handled by R. Reed, who subsequently stated that he was* never dn doubt as to the result. Paquito finished very fast into second place. His Melbourne lOup victory is the crowning achievement in a series of brilliant performances standing to the credit, of Niglitmarch since he went to Australia in the early spring. The more notable of these are. bis victory in the Epsom Handicap at the A.J.C. meeting, his second in the Metropolitan, and his first in the Randwiek Plate.

Pliar Lap, by Night Raid —Entreaty, 3yrs., 7.6 (R. Lewis) 3 There Were fourteen starters. Paquito was first out from T'aisho and Pliar Lap. Taislio led past the stand three-quarters of a length fjrom the hard-held Pliar Lap. Nigh tin arc-It was next, then came High Syce, Shadow King, and Lady Kentrel, with Demost and Second Wind in the rear. Nightmarch dropped back to sixth at the mole, where Phar Lap and Taislio were together a length ahead of High Syce, (Carradale, and Shadow King, with Second Wlind last, and Paquito in the centre of the field. Pliar Lap took command at the six fulrlongs and led at the half mile from Carradale, High Syce, Taislio, Shadow King, Niglitmarch, and Paquito. 'Carradale ran wide at the turn. Phar Lap led into the straight from Shadow King, Tnisho, High Syce, and Nightmareh. The latter ran to the firont at the two furlongs, and won running away with three lengths to spare from the fast-finishing Paquito, with Pliar Lap a. length away; then came High .Syce, Some Quality, Shadow King, Lady Kentrel, Taisho, Kidaides, Second Wind, and Demost. Sea Money and Carradale were last. Time, 3min. 26Jsee.
The Sydney “Evening News,” commenting on the Melbourne Cup, says il proved a wonderful triumph for the Dominion.
The three placed horses are all Mew Zealand-bred, while the jockeys of Night-march and Paquito, Reed and" MciCarten, are New Zealanders; R. H. Telford, who trains and leases Pliar Lap, is also a New Zealander. Tihojre had been ad/verse comment about Roy Reed’s tiding of Night march, and it was thought 'he would be substituted bf another jockey for the Cup race, but Mr. Louisson (the owner) and the trainer (iMcAuley) declined to yield to the criticism.
Mr. Louisson to-day is a proud man. He declaim! it had been bis ambition to win a Melbourne Cup, and money will not now buy Nightmarch.
