GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES

A TOTAL OF 64,000,

The number in Government employ to-day is estimated at over (14,000. Included in the total are 42,198 permanent employees and 'about 22,000 casuals. • The aggregate must be a record if soldiers in the war years he excluded from .past totals.

'Prompted by the heavy engagement of laboutr for unemployed relief woiks, inquiries were made on Thursday to discover how many were at present on the State payroll. As a result, temporary employees were set down at 22,000, of whom 15,000 to 10,000 are engaged on public works ojr relief works of other kinds. The total is, of course, exceptional, juid is due to the special effort- maclie by ' the Government to relieve unemployment. The permanent employees arc distributed among the departments as folow:—
