UNIONS IN AMERICA
“NO. USE FOR THE DRONE.”
iTho contrast in the relative strength of trade unionism in Australia and in the United States of America was remarked upon by Mr. A. J. Gcrrajrd, president of a San f’rancisco wire manufacturing company, who is a through passenger by Niagara which arrived at Auckland on Monday, after spending a month in Australia. Trade unions wcjre practically non-existent in America, except in the building trades, he said. The ntlcmpt to make unionism general had failed 'because the employers had fought it hard and also because too many of the workers l'ealised that they could make more money without it. The survival of the fittest was the principle followed there. “We have no use for the drone,” Mr. Gerrard said. He said the cost of living relative to the wages level was higher in Australia than in the United States.
