MANAWATU RABBIT BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly .meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Board was held iu the secretary’s office this afternoon, presided over by Trustee B. G. Gower (Chairman). Also present were Trustees .J. McKelvie, J. Glovn, R. Boswell, T. Grammar, W. E. Barber and D. R. Barron (inspector). Leave of absence was granted to Trustee F. iO. R-aikes. A letter was received from Mrs. C'Ook, thanking the Board for its letter of sympathy. It was decided to add 10 per cent, to all rates unpaid for the current year as from Ist promimo. Accounts amounting 'to £46 10/ucre passed for payment. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector reported as follows :

During the past month I have been engaged in the general inspection of -properties in the Board area and with following up by personal inspection (the requests sent out for further work in the destruction of rabbits. In all cases with the exception of one, the requests have been carried out, and arrangements have now been made by the owner who did not- immediately comply with the Board’s request to complete the necessary woldk.

The district as a whole is in good order at present, although on some portions, which have been practically clear Coir some time, rabbits *

—more especially young- ones —are beginning to show up, a fact which goes, to show.that more attention should be paid to areas which have been neglected for some time tlfrough the owners of same thinking that- the- rabbits were not in sufficient quantities to warrant any special work being carried out. As pointed out on so many occasions, this-false sense of security from having to carry out work is the means by which tho pest increases each spring in every rabbit-infested area. It is only when this position of ji flairs is pointed out to a farmer on the ground, and he carries out the work, that 1 how The pest in beginning to increase whelre lie thought he didn’t have enough rabbits “to. bother about”: —a remark so often heard.

During the month -a ratepayer in the Board area.was prosecuted for failing to’ take .the necessary steps M destroy rabbits on his property, 'and the defendant was convicted and fined £5 and costs.

During the coming month I shall lie engaged in general inspection work.—Received.
