LOCAL LAD’S FINE PER.FORM-
ANICE,
W. Hussey, the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hussey, of Coley Street, - and member of the local P. and. T. staff, succeeded in placing Foxton on the map in the 100 mile road cycle race between Palmerston North and Wellington on Saturday by winning the event in One style. From the limit mark he led the field from the beginning to the end of the gruelling x’nce, leaving his co-limit marker a mile south of Palmerston North. He made a particularly fast journey to Foxton, passing down Main Street over 18 minutes ahead of his eomarker. Passing through Foxton, the scratch men had gained two minutes ou the ten-minute riders and Lukey and Gane were doing most of the wofik. Hussey reached Levin at 11.7 a.m. after covering the 37 miles, uuaceompanied, in good time.
Hussey reached Paraparaumu at 12.50., Between Levin and Otaki the sotrafeh men caught sight of the fifteen-minute and ten-minute pe(tallefs.
On the run to Paekakariki, Hussey made good time and commenced the task of climbing the hill at a steady pace, riding, running and at times walking. The 17-year-old chaiinpioi) at length reached the top at 1.37 p.m., Tasker reaching it 20 minutes after.
Lukey, Webber and B'lakeaway commenced the climb in a determined fashion and performed the feat of reaching the top without once 'leaving their saddles. The leader on the descent of the lull and oii the run round Paremata Bay, was doing a good 20 miles an hour and tackling the inclines met with in that locality in a very determined manner, eventually reaching the Basin Reserve he circled the track and crossed the finishing line after having covered practically the entire distance unaccompanied. Changes were taking place among the rear markers. Tasker had tff'ed after descending the big hill and was'caught up with by the back markers, Lukey, Blakeway and Webber.
Lukey had been doing all the work in the back division and was tiring when lie led Webber into the Basin to circle the track. A hundred yards from the line, Webber put in his final effort and crossed two lengths ahead of Lulkey. The next rider to show up was Tasker,. Biakeway put in an appearance next.
