TRAVEL AND FITNESS
150,000 miles travel! One can hardly realise what that means. Equal to six times round the earth. The sixth year of touring the world not long begun. To have given more than 859 recitals in that time. What a test of physical fitness. That is the record of William Heughnn’s world tours up-to-date. Not only has he successfully carried that through, but Miss Gladys Saver has accompanied him all the way and always done her part at the concerts too, a very important one as all know who have heard a Heughan concert. Since leaving New Zealand in* September, last year, Australia and the various countries of the Orient have been visited, the return journey being through Australia again. Now they return to New Zealand en route to (Canada and the United States of America. As they return to the various places it is almost always asked “How is he singing?” The surprise is that the public and critics alike usually find him betctr than ever. Over pud over again Heughan is asked how he does it? Fitness'of course, is essential, so like athletes they both keep in training. They have no fads, but just make moderation 'the watch word. Heughan likes a pipe, somea eigar after the concert, but never' cigarettes. Even when all that is said and done, the work of all those recitals could not be done if lie had not a wonderful method of singing. No straining or throaty singing methods could stand up to it. He is quoted in the press as follows: “Although lam a British artist, I give full and due credit to the old Italian, school of singing. Under Vinsonzo Sabatine in Italy I learned how to use my voice. By always.practising on the lines lie taught me, my voice goes on developing year by year just as he said it would. He himself .was singing beautifully in tlfe studio when he was over seventy. To Sabatini’s'teaching and advice I owe what powers I possess.” Over and over again critics have advised' all singers to hear Heughan. No matter what their voice, they will learn a lot by listening to him, and also seeing him on the stage.. His concert at the De Luxe Theatre, Levin, on /Wednesday, October 16th should attract a number from Foxfcon, The box plan is at Stannard’s, Levin.
