RACING
DEATH OF A WfELL-KNOWN JOCKEY. The death of Mr. .James Redmond, at Whangarei, at the age of (it) years, removes one who figured prominently in the turf history of the Dominion forty years ago. Among the more important of innumerable successes that came his way may be •mentioned the Grand National Hurdles on Courauto in .1891; the Grand National Steeplechase on Blackberry in 1899; Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase on Mangaoliane in 1887, on Mo rag in 1897, and ion Rhino in 1898; the Napier Steeplechase ‘on Mangaohane in ISB7, oil Tiritea in 1895, and on Rhino in 1898; the Wanganui Steeplechase on Oddfellow in 1889, on Courauto in 1892, and on Tiritoa in 1895. There was no more reliable man than Jimmie Redmond ever put foot hi stirrup. After his retirement from riding, things did not go too favourably with him, but his later years were passed in comfortable circumstances on his son’s farm at Waikaraka, Whan--garei.
