The Prime Minister suid that in voider tp enable the Government to .institute a proper system, he hoped ail men who were out of work, and who wished to take advantage of the Government’s scheme, would put their names on record at the labour bureaux throughout the country. The Government was now in a position to employ labour, hut wished .to have matters systematised, anil naturally they wished to know that they were getting the r.ght applicants for work. A meeting had already been held and ’Cabinet had decided on the course it was going to pursue. Mr. W. E. Parry (Labour, Auckland Central): “What is the kind of work?” The Prime Minister: “Various kinds of work. , Railways, lands, .building, forestry, roads; in fact, any kind of work that the Government is doing.” The Government wanted to have the applicants names, but they did not want men to say they would not accept the work which was offering. Every class of labour that the Uovetrnment had at its disposal would be put into operation so as to absorb the surplus labour. Mr. R. M‘Keen (Labour, Wellington South): will the first hatch be put on?”
The Prime Minister-: “As soon as we have sufficient men to send to the particular work.” The Leader of the Opposition (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates): “It is quite a fair thing.” Mr. J. A. Nash (Reform, Palmerston North): “Is any (provision being made for men who are unable to do heavy manual work?” Sir Joseph Ward said that was a very awkward problem, and cases would be considered on their merits.
