PREMIER’S DECLARATION. A clear statement that the pViniage duty is only to he imposed temporarily was made by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. 'Sir Joseph Ward) when replying to the debate on the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives on Friday. >
Sir Joseplrsaid that the primage duty was meant to operate for only six months, and had been introduced because it was necessary to have a balanced Budget. He hoped at the end of file financial year to be able to dispense, with the duty. He had iput it in temporarily because it was the most convenient way of meeting the general financial position Mr! W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) asked the 'Prime Minister whether he could give an assurance that the primage duty would not be imposed for a longer period than six months.
Tlie Prime Minister replied that he could not do so until he knew what the financial position was likely to be. The financial course was being: shaped with a view of being able to do away with the duty.
