CADBURY-FRY CHOCOLATE FACTORY.
STILL SEARCHING 'FOR A SITE.
Some time ago Mr. George Sara, New Zealand manager for Messrs Cadbury and Fry, let it be publicly known that the firm intended to commence the manufacture of their wares in New Zealand provided a suitable site, could be obtained. The centres up and down this coast invited Mr. 'Sara to visit them, and inspections were, made but so far no definite site has been decided upon. In conversation with a press representative, Mr. Sara indicated some of the difficulties which confronted the expeli'ts in their choice of location. Humidity, lie explained, was one of the chief detenu ining factors. The chocolate is as sensitive' as it is delectable, requiring a. dry and even temperature, and a. climate showing over-much variation aiM too much moisture content makes the manufacture of the world’s most popular sweet a. matter of difficulty and uncertainty. In England, of course, both these climatic'faults have to be contended with, but there the atmosphere of the factory is artificially tempered.
Here the considerable expense attaching to such a condition must be avoided if possible, and the experts are carrying out a scries of exhaustive -tests —which will not be completed 'for anothefr three months —to determine the humidity of the atmosphere in a. number of chosen localities.
Air. Sara indicated that practically' the whole of the North Island has reacted unfavourably to the test, and it may be necessary to go further south. Distribution is anothefr important determining factor, and the experts’ diffileulties have been added to by the discovery that where the atmosphere has proved kind there is in most cases a sad lack of distributing facilities. In these circumstances it -may yet be necessary to seek a spot, in the 'Wellington province, and in such an event one of the places which may be looked upon with a'friendly eye is Levin.
