THE EQUINOX AND BEGINNING OF SPRING.
Monday, is the date of the vernal equinox in southern latitudes. The term is applied to the moment when, the sun apparently crosses the celestial equator and means literally “equal night,” indicating that at that time the time between sunset and sunrise is the same as between sunrise and sunset. On Monday the sun will rise at 5.40 a.m., and set at. 5.48 pan., so strictly speaking daylight beats darkness by a few minutes. The vernal equinox marks, according to the generally accepted convention, the beginning of spring.
