MANAWHENUA DEFEAT SOUTHLAND.
After the most brilliant and interesting interprovincial Rugby match seen in Palmerston North for some seasons past Southland (holders of the Ranfurl'y Shield) were decisively defeated by Manawhenua yesterday afternoon, the score reaching 27 —17 in favour of the home team, Playing conditions were ideal, the ground being suited to fast open back play, with little wind to trouble the contestants. Manawhenua, who had the advantage of a slight breeze in the first half, scored three tries, two of which were converted, without reply from Southland, whoso game was dominated by their opponents. The touirists went much better after the change over and scored a converted try and a penalty goal before Manawhenua added to their account. Three more tries, one of which was converted, went to Manawhenua’s credit, and after Southland had added nine points from a converted try and a field goal Manawhenua closed the scoring with another unconverted try.-
The game was played at a fast pace throughout, and the Manawhenua backs were seen in some tine passing movements, the wingers making runs which gained much ground. The tackling of both teams was deadly. The Manawhenua tries were scored by Dalziell (2), T. Parata, Stirangc (2), Akuira and Tatana. Akuira converted two and Tatana one, For Southland the scorers were Fitzgerald (2), both of which Anderson converted. Anderson also 'kicked a penalty goal, and Holden potted a goal. Mr. T. Parata proved an excellent referee.
In a very hard game played at a fast pace under warm conditions the Otago touring Rugby team defeated Hawke’s Bay at Napier yesterday afternoon by one point, the scores being 14 to 13. Though the visitors wore lucky to emerge the winners, they thoroughly deserved their win. They made fewer mistakes than the home, side, and made the very best of the opportunities that came their way.
