DEATH OF GENERAL VON SANDERS.
Munich, 24th August
The death is announced of General Liman von Sanders, who was Commandelr-in-Chief of the Turkish Army during the war and who organised the defence of Gallipoli. He afterwards directed the operations of the Turkish forces in Palestine, and was nearly captured at Nazareth in September, 1918, during General Allenby’s final offensive. lAN HAMILTON’S TRIBUTE. London, '24th August. Sir lan Hamilton, in a tribute to General von Sanders, says that he was a most chivalrous foe, as all who fought against him would agree. “He might often have easily fired on our wounded, yet he always avoided any breach of the rules of war. His name after the war was listed among those to be tried for their actions during hostilities. I sent a letter to ‘The Times’ saying I was assured I ;-poke for the Dardanelles troops in saying that they did not wish to see him tried. He was a clean fighter, and played fair during our one brief armistice. He never shelled clearing stations or hospital camps.”
