THE WHIROKINO HIGHWAY.

MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL’S ACTION. The continual menace by floods to the Wjhii’okino road, which forms part of (the Wiellington-Audkland main highway, was the subject of a letter from the Foxton Champer of Commerce dealt with at Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council. The Chamber forwarded a copy of a letter it had directed to the Main Highways Boaird, pointing out the serious obstacle to through traffic which the continual flooding of this highway presented and urging early action to abate the menace. The flood area was rather a sore point with Foxton, remarked the chairman, hut the council could not take any action on the letter until it 'heajrd from the Main Highways Board. The council was fully alipe to the position and the letter would be “received” meanwhile.

PALMERSTON CHAMBER SEEKS FULL DETAILS. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening also received a request firom the Foxton 'Chamber, for assistance in making representations to the Highways Board for the safe-guar-ding of the Levin-Foxton road. It was pointed out that there was an urgent necessity for action in keeping the road open for traffic along that portion subject to flood. If the road was raised three feet, there would be no need to divert traffic over a wide detour at much expanse and (inconvenience. The matter was considered of national importance in connection with the main arterial route 'between Wellington and Auckland. The president (Mr. M. H. Oram) wondered if the cost of raising the road would he warranted, compared with the inconvenience suffered. There was also the other question of whether it was not more important to get the other main route via Shannon completed first. Then the move to divert the river might have an effect on any scheme proposed. The Foxton Chamber had given no idea of the cost of the work. Mr. W. G. Ross asked if there was any information as to the amount of traffic that had been diverted, and for how long the road had been closed? The president said there was not, and it was decided to write for fuller particulars.
