TOWN HALL, Victor Hugo’s big story “The Man Avho Laughs,” has been pieturised in 10 Avonderful reels and will be the big attraction at the Town Hall to-nigh't. The leading role is just such another as Lon Chaney in the “Hunchback,” and it Avas here that Universal struck its first master stroke. The title role is played by Conrad Veidt, who so (superbly plays the role of the clown, who in childhood was the victim of -Comprachicos avlio distorted, the boy’s features 'to a Avide grin. It is doubtful if anothdr actor on the screen could have taken the part so creditably. And Mary Philbin contributes Avithout- doubt the ‘best work of her career. It is outstanding because she is so divinely suited to this particular role. And the supporting cast, including the exotic Olga Budanova, Branddon Hurst, Caesar Ggavina and many other well known names, all excel in their respective roles. There are turbulent, impressive court scenes —colourful carnival shots. ' Castle -and peasant playgrounds both serve as a background to the (romance of a blind girl and a disfigured clown whose lives are linked together in infancy. “Mother Maehree,” Rida Johnson Young’s Avorld-famed .song and story that has stirred the hearts of the World, has been translated to the screen by Fox Films under the direction of John Ford and will be screened at the Toavh Hall on Monday. Without doubt this photodrama will taike its place besides Folrd’s other great -productions, “The Iron Horse” and “3 Bad Men.” A east of stars includes Belle Bennett in the title role, Victor Mc-Laglen, as the Kilkenny Giant, Neil Hamilton as the son of Mother -Maehree, Ethel Clayton and Philippe De Lacey, as the little son in the early sequences of the story. All interpret, their various roles with poignant and Avhimsical realism. Prices 2/- and 1/6. (Children half price.
