FOATON RACING CLUB’S CHANGE IN DATES.

FAVOURABLY COMMENTED ON AT ANNUAL MEETING.

The matter of the Club’s change of racing dates was discussed at last- night’s annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club and on the whole members seemed more than satisfied with the change. The President (Mr. AY. E. Barber) considered the Club’s better financial position was due, in a large measure, to the change in dates. It had been a big move, he said, to change the dates after fifty years, hut apparently it was a .move in the right direction. Air. J. A\ T . Bowe asked if the President considered the success of last meeting due to the change in dates. He was of opinion that the betteir financial position of thie country had a lot to do with it. He thought that it was regrettable that the dates had been changed after fifty years of raicing on Anniversary Day. M]r. Bowe considered too much had been made of the AAMlington opposition and that even with the alteration in dates the horses had been no better at the last meeting. The totalisator returns, he said, had gone up at Ashhurst and Pahiatua without any change in dates. Most of the country clubs had shown an improvement. 'The change had 'been made, however, and was now iitt'evocable. The President said that he had acted as “tote” steward for many years now and he was in a position to say that for several years there had been an absence of “punting” at local meetings hut this had been in evidence at the last meeting showing that the big bettors from Millington and elsewhere were at the: meeting.

Mr. Bowe: I beg to differ. Mr. Wl T. Jewell said the change was undoubtedly beneficial to the Club, ami the stewards were to he congratulated on their foresight in making the change. Previously the Club had lost ,practically all the racegoers from Levin south who had attended the "Wellington meeting in preference to the Foxton fixture. These were diverted to Foxton last year by the change. Mir. H. V. Bond said lie was satisfied after trying the change out that it was a success. Mr. Bowe: One swallow doesn’t make the summer!

Mr. Bond: No, hut wait until two Of "me along and then we’ll have a real good summer, (laughter). Mr. C. Hunt congratulated the Ouh on' the change. He had .been in favour of it twenty years ago, lie. said. Mr. J. Burr said the Club’s gate receipts were down last meeting. Mr. Bor gin: But we made £350 more on the meeting. The President : The betting public was there.' After further congratulatory remarks on the change "of the date the discussion was ‘ dropped.
