SALVATION ARMY CONCERT
On Thursday evening’ the local Salvation Army held a very, successful concert in the (Royal theatre in aid of the Salvation Army Guards. The programme which was mainly contributed to by the Guards was of a, high standard and the .performance was enjoyed by all present. During the evening the Mayo|r (Mr. AI. E. Perreau) presented till eGuides with their badges and expressed the hope that they would continue with the good work they were at present carrying out in the community.
The opening' song, “A Worthy Name,” was sung by the Guards and followed by a pianoforte duet by the Misses Botarog. “Word Making and Word Taking” ' by the united Guards, who also contributed dialogues entitled “Everyday Guides” and “The Double Test.” Physical drill numbers etc., were much appreciated. A very effective item was the Japanese Lantern drill by the girls. Messrs Thompson and Kirkland contributed a vocal duct and Messrs -Hakaraia, L. Cornell and the Maori t|rio had to respond to encores. Guard Ellis was recalled for repetition of her solo “Please. Give Me a Penny,” and a similar ovation was accorded Guard Thompson for her recitation “Going an Errand.” The programme concluded with team games and a camp fl|re scene. Accompaniments were played by Misses Patterson and Mrs. Bowden. The Guards desire to thank Mrs. A. C'oughtrey for the loan of a piano for the performance. Those Avho were presented with their badges were as follows: — Beginners:—Lottie Hofmann and Mona Withers. Second Class Test: — Dolly Adams, Ella Wallbutton, Kathleen Leach. Proficiency Test: —(Cyclist: Pay Andrews; dressmaker: May 'Sunley and Clarice Hobbs; instrumen■i;ilist: Ella Hutchins and Clarice Hobbs. Salvation Army: —Ella Hutchins (first to be granted). Needlework: —Louie Martin. Laundry work: —Ella Hutchins. Pi re: —Ella Hutlehins and Ma.y Sunley. The special prize awarded by the - ‘ommanding Officers and Divisional Young peoples’ Secretary to the Guard obtaining the most new girls was won by Guard Dolly Adams.
