GRANTS TO SMALL BOROUGHS.
r “The funds of the Main HighAvays Board are required to deal with the problems of the present and the immediate future,” said the Minister of Public Works (Hon. E. A. Ransom) in the House of Representatives on Wednesday in reply to the suggestion of Mi’. F. Lye (Waikato) that the board be empoAvered to make annual grants to "the smaller boroughs Avho had expended loan moneys in laying down witli permanent materials certain streets Avhich formed part of main highways. “To commence retrospective payments would open the board to enormous claims, <and lender of no avail the efforts of the Government, through the operations of the Highways Board, to improve the roads of the Dominion,” the Minister added.
