FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting 1 of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s rooms on Thursday evening,, presided oveir by the President (Mr. J. K. Hornblow). MOTION OF SYMPATHY. A motion of sympathy was accorded the relatives of the late Mr. Win.-'Ross, who for many years was a member of the Chamber. FREIGHTS TO .PORT OF FOXTON. A reply was received to the Chamber's letter to the N.Z. Flour Distributors, of Christchurch, ashing that freight should be paid on flour shipped through the port of Foxton whiieh .privilege was enjoyed iby Wanganui and Wellington, stating that the Chamber’s letter would be placed before a meeting of directors early next month. Received. On the motion of Mr. H. E. Corbett it was decided to forward a copy of the Chamber's letter similar to above in respect to biscuit freights to Mr. Kingsland, President of the Biscuit Manufacturers’ Association, Invercargill. REMIT TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE. At the Chamber’s request Mr. Win. Trueman framed the following remit, which is to be forwarded to the annual conference of Chambers of Commerce to be held in Auckland on 14th and 15th October: — “That the Executive be asked to revise the scale of affiliation fees, with a view to affording relief to country chambers on a suggested population of the they are situated.” SHIPPING CONFERENCE. It was reported that the Palmerston North Chamber of IGommeree had discussed the matter of railway freights and the preferential tariff in connection, with the local pojrt and decided that members should meet the local Chamber and other local body representatives at a round table conference, but no official intimation to this effect had reached the Chamber. It was decided to hold over any further. action in this connection pending, word from the Palmerston North! body. UNIVERSAL (HALF HOLIDAY. A general discussion ensued on the question' of the advisability or otherwise of (auniversallha.lf-holiday but after arguments both for and against had been heard ,the Chamber decided not to take any action in the matter, but to await the decision of Parliament in connection therewith. NEW COURTHOUSE.

The question was (raised as to whether there should be some celebration to mark the opening of the new Courthouse which is almost ready for occupation, hut the President stated that the Justice Department did not view with favour suc'h functions in respect to Justice Department buildings, and the Chamber decided not to take any eeti on .in.the tter.•:-—«* -■ A DANGEROUS CORNER. The secretary reported that recently 'there had been two narrow escapes from motor .accidents at the north end of the Triangle by motorists mistaking the footpath for the roadway at the intersection of Avenue Road and Park Street in front of the Town Hall. There was a light located in the Traihgle about a chain to the south of' the eotrner proper, and as Park Street was on an angle with Main Street the road on a dark, wet night was very deceiving. After discussion it was decided to irequest the Borough Council to give consideration to the (matter of removing the light in the Triangle to the corner of Park. Street. HEATERS FOR FOXTON TRAIN. Mr. J. Majrtin (stationmaster) reported that he had received a reply from the Railway Department relative to the request that the Department should provide heaters on the Fox ton-P aimers ton North train to the effect that the cost of such would iprove prohibitive. Mr. Martin was thanked for his efforts in thel matter.
