EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.
CANADIAN OFFER OF ASSISTANCE. PRIME MINISTER’S REPLY. Wellington, Last Night. Afs. H. E. Holland ('Buffer) asketl the Prime Minister in the House to-day whether any offer of assistance in connection with the earthquake had been made by the United States and had been refused. Sir Joseph W'iard replied stating that 1 the following cablegram had been received from Air. Brown, editor of the Province newspaper, Vancouver, on June 20. “Vancouver will gladly contribute for earthquake sufferers it privations are widespread. Ivindly cable if outside help is required.” Sir Joseph Ward slated he had replied on the same date: “Vaneouvejr’s generous readiness to contribute for earthquake sufferers is deeply appreciated but I am not yet in a position to assess the damage. The severe shock was (confined to a small area in a sparsely populated northern portion of the South Island, where 15 deaths occurred through laud slips. The damage in other parts of the Dominion was negligible.”
