For assaulting a constable, the accused was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. He was ordered -to pay the cost of damage to the constable’s uniform. The charge against Ohesham of being intoxicated while in charge of a (vehicle, was dismissed. On Saturday evening July 13th, Constable E. PI. Compton, of Palmerston North, attempted to arrest an 'allegedPi intoxicated motorist in Rangitikei Street. The customary hail to stop not being obeyed, the constable, in best Tom Mix style, moil lifted itlie running board of 'the moving vehicle and endeavoured to switch off the engine. The motorist had different ideas, particularly regarding arrest, and is said to have tried to shift the constable from his position by brushing him against two approaching autos. Eventually, the limb of the law lost his hold and the driver retained his freedom foil al period. The first act of the sequel took plaice at the (Palmerston Police Court on Wednesday morning, when Frederick Ohesham, farmer, 'of Rangiotu, was charged that on July 13, while in a state of intoxication he was in charge of a motor car in Rangitikei Street. Further, that on the. same date, being the drivel’ in charge of a motor car, he did fail to--stop when requested to do so; further on the same date he did assault Compton while in the execution of his duty and finally that he did wilfully damage one police helmiet, valued at 8/6. one police mackintosh, valued at £2 6/9, and one pair of police trousers, valued ait £1 13/9, the property of the New Zealand Government.
