PREFERENTIAL RAILWAY FREIGHTS.
FOXTON’S UNFAIR HANDICAP.
CONFERENCE SUGGESTED
At its last meeting the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce set up a special committee t*o consider a request to be made to the Minister for a preferential railway rate on freight between Foxton, and Palmerston North. The committee went fully into the points raised by the Foxton Chamber of ‘Commerce and also the Shipping Company, but it was felt, according to a report submitted to Tuesday’s meeting of the Chamber bv Mr. Jas. Wallace, that there would be vary little use going to the Minister and asking for this concession, which would be more likely to influence traffic away from the railway from Wellington to Palmerston North, with the .prospect of further losses to the department. The question of shipping Palmerston North goods through Foxton seemed to the committee to be bristling with difficulties at the' present time as far as service to Palmerston North was concerned and the committee’s recommendation was that Messrs Winks, Stuart and Goldinghann Jm\, meet the representatives of the Foxton Cl iamb or and the Shipping Company a I a round table conference lo see whether any improvement could be made in the service. Air. A. P. Stuart added that many anomalies would crop up if the matter was tackled straight away and the committee thought that finality was more likely to be reached by a conference. The report was adopted.
