“COBWEB” SOCIAL
SUCCESSFUL METHODIST EFFORT. FOR EARTHQUAKE FUND. Last Tuesday evening a social was held in the Town Hall sup-per-room by the Methodist Ladies’ Guild in aid of the earthquake fund. The evening was advertised as a “cobweb social” which created a good deal of speculation as to the form this innovation would take. A huge cobweb was stretched across the supper-room and was very realistic in its appearance. At the outer edge of the web was the prize and the efforts 'at extrication of those who became entangled in the meshes of the web in their endeavours to reach the parcel were very amusing. 'The innovation was particularly good and caused much amusement for both participants and onlookers. In addition to the “cobweb,” gapes and a guessing competition were indulged in, the latter being tied foir by Miss Edmondson, Mr. L. iflouch and Master M. Byrnes, the prize eventually going to Master Syim'es. Vocal items were contributed by Mrs. Riches, Miss Wilson, and Messrs G. V. tSmith and L. Couch which were much appreciated. During the evening, Rev. Edmondson referred to the object of the social and thanked those piesent for their assistance in a very deserving -cause. He also paid a tribute to the members of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild, who had taken the initiative steps in the matter. As a, result of the effort, the earthquake fund will benefit to the extent -of £6.
