EARTHQUAKE.

ORIGIN AT SEA? STEAMER CAPTAIN’S BELIEF. Westport, July 11. (Captain Wjahlstrom, of the steamer Orepuki, is .firmly of opinion that the big earthquake had its origin out at sea to the westward of New Zealand. He bases his opinion on his observations as the Orepuki was plugging her way down the coast. Although heavy southwesterly weather prevailed, as far as the eye ckmld see to the westward was heavily discoloured warier. This could not have been brought about by discharge from the rivers on the West Coast. Further, a later report stated that a steamer on the Tasman Sea had passed through vast quantities of dead fish.
