EARTHQUAKE AND FLOODS.
A Moutoa correspondent signing himself “Manawatn” writes as follows to the “Dominion”:—
“I, in common with the rest of the Dominion, appreciate and heartily support the Government in the very prompt measures they have taken to alleviate the distress and the very generous financial assistance they have -offered and propose to gtrant to rehabilitate the sufferers of -the recent disastrous earthquake.
“In the Manawatn district thousands of acres of the finest land in New Zealand have been under flood waters -for the past seven weeks as a result of flood waters v,-ashing away the floodbanks. Settlers have been driven from their homes and farms, together with their stock, fences have been destroyed and damaged, drains have been filled up with silt and i-übbish, and pasture has been destroyed, so that with the -milking season just opening it is impossible for the farmers to do any good for the rest of the season. “I am interested to know w-hat is the Government, doing for these flood sufferers and to prevent a re-, eiu’rence of these disastrous visitations. Surely the Government and -the Parliament of New Zealand do not think that flood sufferers are less entitled to consideration than earthquake sufferers.”
