A BACK-DATED LICENSE
SAVES LORRY OWNER FROM CONVICTION.
At the local S.M. Court this morning before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., a local Native had a lucky letoff from a conviction by reason of his being able to produce a license which had inadvertently been backdated by the Manawatu County Council. The Native in question was Tuna Rori, of Motuiti, who was charged that being the owner of a motor lorry, permitted the use of saine in Main Street without a heavy traffic license. Mr. M. B. Bergin appeared for plaintiffs (Foxton Borough Council). Defendant pleaded not guilty and produced a license issued by the Manawatu County Council. Mr. (Bergin said defendant was the ownejr of the lorry which the Natives were in the habit of using to car flax from Motuiti to Foxton. Defendant had been warned by the local inspector (Mr, W. Neville) to obtain a heavy traffic license but had failed to do so until after the summons had been issued. The license was not taken out until June after the summons was issued. The license was produced and after examination the S.M. said that it had evidently been hack-dated as it eojvered defendant from the beginning of the .year for which the license had to be taken out. The Manawatu County Council had no light to issue a license for the three months previously. The license should not have been backdated. Mir. Berry (Inspector Manawatu County Council) said it was only by talking the defendant to court that they were able to make him taika out a license. The S.M. said that defendant was able to show that he had a license for the. period owing to it having been back-dated and the case was dismissed.
